Home Or Hospital? Finding The Best Birth For You

When you’re pregnant, you have a lot on your plate. And no, that’s not because you’re eating for two. It’s because you have to grow a child, and plan a birth at the same time. While few of us like to consider the birth aspect of pregnancy before we conceive, it’ll be at the front of your mind throughout your pregnancy. There are so many opinions about the right and wrong way to do it. How can you make informed decisions when everyone seems to disagree?

One of the major sticking points is whether you should have a hospital or home birth. The warriors for both believe that their way is THE way. But, when the health of you and your child hang in the balance, such blind faith isn’t helpful. You need hard facts to ensure you make the best decision possible. And, that’s what we’re going to give you here. Home vs. hospital, take it away!

HOSPITAL

You could argue that a hospital birth is the norm. Many women follow this route, and it’s easy to see why. Giving birth in the hospital ensures you’re close to medical equipment. Monitors can ensure the baby’s health throughout. And, if anything did happen, doctors could take you to the theatre in no time at all. If you’re a first-time mum or have any fears, a hospital birth is probably the best route. Doctors may also recommend this if you’ve had problematic pregnancies in the past.

But, hospital births have their downsides. For one, no one really embraces the idea of their child entering the world in such a setting. Let’s be honest; despite the wonders they work, hospitals aren’t the nicest places to be. Plus, they’re busy. As such, your partner may not be able to stay with you for long after the birth. And, the chances are that you’ll be moved to a ward with other mothers not long after delivery. It’s hardly ideal when you’re exhausted, and not looking your best. All you’ll want to do is sleep in a quiet room.

HOME

A number of home births in the US are ever on the rise. There are obvious benefits to this option, such as the chance to have your child in the comfort of your home. There’s also the advantage of not needing to rely on hospital spaces. And, if you plan such a birth with an obstetrician like Max Izbicki, there’s no reason this should pose any risk. In fact, it can be just as safe as a hospital birth.

The downside is that you’re not near any medical equipment. To get around this issue, get a professional on board. With adequate planning, there’s no reason you can’t have a midwife with you throughout.

As mentioned above, women who have had complicated births in the past won’t be able to choose this option. The risks aren’t worth taking. But, if you’ve never had a problem before, there’s no reason a home birth couldn’t work for you.
